Autism Society Rhode Island

Educate, Advocate, Raise Awareness

The Autism Society of America – Rhode Island Chapter strives to “Educate, Advocate, Raise Awareness”.  We feel that by educating others about Autism and its’ devastating effects on individuals and their families, we hope to incite others to become advocates.  And by encouraging others to advocate we succeed in raising awareness of the disability.

Currently ASA-RI is very involved in promoting ALEC training through the state of Rhode Island so that our emergency responders (Fire, EMT) know how to identify an individual with Autism and how to communicate with them before an emergency situation happens.  This endeavor is in a large part funded by our yearly “In Step for Autism” 5k Walk held every Fall.

The Executive Committee of ASA-RI attends the yearly conference held by Autism Society of America to be most-up-to-date on all legislation, treatments, research, etc. We also travel each year to Washington, D.C. for personal meetings with our four elected officials.  During these meetings we are able to discuss the growing concerns of individuals with Autism, federal legislation which is specifically geared toward that disability and advocate for our loved ones.
